There is so much information out there, some true and some false, that we wanted to make sure you are getting accurate information. At this time, there is no recommendation from the CDC to discontinue contact lens wear. However, the CDC does recommend that we refrain from touching our eyes, nose and mouth. As a contact lens wearer that proves difficult.
To avoid possible infection we have always recommended washing your hand thoroughly before handling your contact lenses. We are now recommending that you wash your hands both before and after putting your contact lenses in and again before and after removing your contact lenses. It is also recommended that you follow all manufacturer instructions for proper cleaning and disinfection listed on your contact lens solution bottle. If you are still concerned about disinfection, we suggest changing to a hydrogen peroxide solution system like Clear Care or Aosept. If you do so, please be sure to read and follow the directions carefully prior to use.
For established patients of Hoover Vision Center, if you will be needing a supply of contact lenses in the next month, we are asking that you place your orders now. We are currently closed to all non-urgent patients at this time; however we are available by phone for contact lens orders from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM M-F or you can place orders directly on our website. Furthermore, we will extend contact lens prescriptions on a case by case basis without an evaluation at this time. We are unsure as to how long distributors will continue to fill orders, so if you think you will need more contact lenses in the coming months, we suggest that you place your orders ASAP. They will be delivered directly to your home with free shipping.
Finally, we are offering the option of switching to a daily disposable contact lens temporarily for patients who are concerned about re-wearing their monthly/biweekly lenses during this time and fall within the daily disposable fitting parameters. If you would like to discuss if this may be an option for you or if you have any questions about COVID-19 and contact lens wear, please call our office (205) 985-7640.
