Is your child’s eye exam on your back-to-school check list?

With back-to-school quickly approaching, parents have many things to do to prepare their children for a successful school year.  Here’s why an eye exam should be on your back-to-school check list:

(1)  Approximately 80% of learning takes place through a child’s eyes. Give your child all the tools to succeed by making sure their vision is the best it can be.
(2)  School screenings are not enough.  Optometrists will look at the complete health of your child’s eyes and they will determine if your child has a need for glasses.
(3)  Undiagnosed vision problems can lead to misdiagnosed health & behavioral problems.  Studies demonstrate that 60 percent of children classified as students with learning-disabilities actually suffer from undiagnosed vision troubles.  If a child is having trouble seeing, it makes sense that he or she may have trouble participating in class and doing his or her work.

Remember that the sooner a vision difficulty is identified and treated, the greater the chances for successful treatment.  If a child’s vision is impaired, rising visual requirements such as finer print in books or additional homework can drastically alter a student’s performance.  At the same time new technology in the classroom, including using interactive SMARTboards & tablets, can also make potentially less obvious vision problems worse.

Since a child’s eyesight can change often, consistent eye and vision care is crucial to a student’s classroom success.

So before school starts this year, make sure your child’s vision is on your list!
